How to Choose the Perfect Backsplash for Your Kitchen

Adding a backsplash to your kitchen may seem like an unnecessary design cost, but it actually has an extremely functional purpose that shouldn’t be overlooked. Though backsplashes were built to protect your walls from any unwanted spills or splatters that are bound to happen in the kitchen, they also make clean-up easy and keep out any unwanted pests like mice or insects. There’s no reason you shouldn’t have a proper backsplash in your kitchen, so why not make it one you love?

Protect the walls in your kitchen with a creative tile combination to add color, character, and personality to your space! There are, however, a variety of factors to think about when picking a backsplash. Here are some things to consider when choosing the perfect backsplash for your kitchen:

  • Budget. Before you look at anything, decide on the budget you have for your backsplash. This will help you narrow down your options on other elements you may be considering for the tile and backsplash as a whole. In general, it’s better to allocate most of your budget to finding a great material and using high-quality grout, which will ensure your backsplash lasts for years.

  • Area. Where do you want the backsplash to go? While most people decide to take their backsplash only as high as the bottom of their cabinets or stove range, some may try to make more of a statement by taking the backsplash up to the ceiling, all around the kitchen. This will, of course, affect your budget, but if you’re looking for a clean and unique looking kitchen, this may be the choice for you!

  • Material. The material of your backsplash can drastically change the look of your kitchen. Go for something luxe and classic with matte, metallic, or glossy materials, or go for a bolder look with the 3D tile. You may also choose something more rustic with textured stone or brick.

  • Shape.  Most people go the safe route and pick rectangle tile to create that subway tile look you see in many kitchens. Choosing a unique shape is a fun way to add personality to your kitchen and give it that unique factor you’ve been looking for: choose squares, hexagons, chevron, or even a wave pattern.

  • Color. Another way to add personality to your kitchen is the color of your backsplash! You may pick something simple like white, or choose a fun design with bright, fun colors.

  • Contrast and Compatibility. Whatever backsplash you pick, make sure it goes with the rest of your kitchen. Does it match your cabinets, counters, and hardware? If not, do you have the budget to change those as well? Remember, you’ll have this backsplash for a while, so you want to make sure it’s something you love in the grand scheme of your entire kitchen.
